Who We are

We are real and passionate writers with lots of experience both writing and teaching writing.

Dr Ed Wright

Dr Ed Wright - Founder

Since its founding in 2015 by Newcastle based authors, Ed Wright and Wendy James, The Creative Workshop has taught writing to hundreds of people from Newcastle and beyond. We have conducted workshops for primary and secondary students in local schools, at the Newcastle Writers Festival and at the opening of the Barangaroo Park in Sydney.  Our school holiday Creative Writing Workshops for kids continue to grow in popularity. Ed’s HSC Creative Writing Workshops and English Tutoring have helped students improve their English results.

Adult courses taught by Ed, Wendy and more recently Jess Black have proven popular and helpful for writers. With a two-book deal and a three days a week job in Sydney, Wendy has stepped out of the business, and while her presence has been missed, we have been lucky to feature talented Newcastle-based writers such as Jess Black, Vanessa Bates, Rosemarie Milsom, Ivy Ireland, David Kelly, Maggie Ball and Jenny Blackford as guest teachers, all of them who are published writers.

Ed is the best-selling author of six popular histories, a book of poems and an award-winning novella. He also writes a column on Australian Fiction for The Australian newspaper. He has a Ph.D. in Literature from the University of Sydney and is currently a Conjoint Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Newcastle, where he also teaches part-time. Ed has also taught Creative Writing classes at primary and high schools including Merewether High School, Warners Bay High, Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College, Kotara High, Knox Grammar, Penrith Anglican College, Concord High School, Summer Hill PS, North Annandale PS, Hill End PS and Ultimo PS.

Ed is a qualified Primary School Ethics teacher. He also works as a copywriter, content specialist and editor for select clients in the Hunter and beyond.
